Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
