Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
