A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
